Chapter Thirty-Four

Reece splashed out of the water, shivering in the early evening air, and grabbed her towel.

It had been lovely while she’d been in the water but once out her skin chilled with the cool breeze. She toweled off quickly to remove all the dripping water from her body and grabbed her hat and sandals.

She’d thought—no, hoped—that the dip would calm her. It hadn’t made one spot of difference. If anything, the cloying heat and arousal was worse.

The colorful birds croaked and bounced through the branches of the trees as she walked up the pathway to the house. She eyed them.

“Ugly bastards,” she muttered. She knew they weren’t called birds here. To tell the truth they looked nothing like them; but hell, they had wings and lived in trees. They were birds as far as she was concerned.

Aubron had bought her as a pleasure slave?

Good.

She was going to ask him to pleasure her.

If he refused, well, she was that damned frustrated it wouldn’t take much to sort herself out.

Could Tiatha be right? She’d lain awake half the night wondering. If she was indeed reacting to Aubron chemically, it was going to be a bastard if it occurred every month.

Maybe he’d be nice and she’d get lucky once a month. That would actually be something to look forward to. The thought of having his toned, exquisite form moving on top of her made her fan her face.

She barked out a laugh. The birds in the tree to her right squealed at the sound, startled.

Not flipping likely.

She hung her wet towel over the back of a chair on the patio and stepped into the dining room. She pushed her wet hair off her face as she walked into the lounge room.

Her stomach hit her toes and her desire evaporated. The scene before her didn’t compute.

Aubron, kissing that woman?

Her hands held his head in place, his on her waist. Her gut twisted.

So much for him not liking her. It actually hurt to watch.

She dropped her sandals on the tiled floor. They clattered when they hit. He jerked back, pulling his mouth from Alais’s.

His gaze clashed with hers. At least he had the decency to look flustered.

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to interrupt.”

Her sarcastic tone wasn’t lost on either of them, but she didn’t really care. She felt foolish thinking that he might stoop to being attracted to her.

She sighed to herself. At least nothing had changed.

“Would your girlfriend like a drink? I'm getting some mu-pa,” she said with sugary sweetness.

Alais looked surprised at her words, Aubron livid.

Good. Maybe he’ll feel cheated. Like I do.

It wasn’t a terribly adult response but hey, she was allowed a little leeway. The man had lied to her.

“No, Alais was just—”

“I’d love some. Calin? Are you thirsty?”

Reece pasted her own fake smile on her lips and spoke through gritted teeth, “He can get his own.”

She spun and stalked into the kitchen, determined not to give into the sudden tears that now threatened. Bloody hell, if she got any more hormonal she’d melt into a puddle.
